We love cape honeysuckle at La Tejana! This tropical flowering shrub (which is often grown as a container-garden plant in the North) flowers on and off all year long, producing flamboyant clusters of bold red, orange, or yellow flowers that are irresistible to hummingbirds. Happily, cape honeysuckle is more than just a pretty face: It’s also a cinch to grow, so you can enjoy its charms without feeling like you’re always working to keep it up.
As a vine, it can scramble over structures or slopes and even be trained into espalier shapes. Despite its lush look, it has low water requirements and is recommended for xeriscapes and fire-safe landscaping. The plant can drop its leaves in cooler areas and should be protected from temperatures below 26 degrees Fahrenheit. It has been known to come back from its roots when it is damaged by cold. Mulch the roots to insulate them from temperature extremes.
Please be advised that humans and/or animals may have allergic reactions if part(s) of this plant are consumed or by coming into contact with sap from bruised or broken plant parts: Handling may cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals.
