Soft Tip Yucca

Yucca recurvifolia

  • As spear-shaped leaves mature they develop a gentle curve.
  • Weeping foliage creates a stunning fountain-like effect.
  • Perfect for challenging hot locations near pavement.
  • Does best in light, sandy, well-drained soil.

For tropical effect, the Soft Tip Yucca has few rivals. An evergreen native of southeastern United States, it is prominently used in desert conditions where drought and intense heat are common. Growing to approximately 6’ tall with a 6-8’ spread, it forms a trunk of downward leaning narrow blue-green leaves with sharp tips and red borders.

In the spring and summer, stalks of creamy white bell-shaped flowers tower 2-5’ above the foliage and create a habitat for hummingbirds and other wildlife. Best in Sunset Western Garden zones 7-10 and 12-24, they are excellent in containers or as a focal point near pools. They require very little water, perhaps twice a month even in the summertime but require well-drained sandy soil.
